By Samantha Matheny

Being diagnosed with diabetes is an extremely frightening to have to face. The good news is, diabetes is treatable and preventable. Diabetes has been classified into two categories, Type 1 and Type 2. Each has its own distinctive characteristics and treatments.

Type 1 diabetes, or juvenile diabetes, generally only appears in children and young adults. With type 1 diabetes, the pancreas does not produce any or enough insulin for your body. Insulin is used by the body to to process food and sugars for energy. Type 1 diabetes always requires insulin injection therapies, but eating a proper diet can greatly aid your pancreas. Remember, the body is not making insulin, so it needs help.

Not only are insulin injections part of staying healthy with type 1 diabetes, but eating right and getting plenty of exercise is a must! Some people have even been able to reduce the amount of insulin the take from eating right and exercising. Complications with diabetes can cause death, so take care of yourself!

Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes in the United States. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body does not process insulin correctly. No one really knows what causes this type, but weight and genetics seem to play a very important part in the onset of diabetes.

Treating type 2 diabetes can be easier and much harder than type 1 diabetes. They key to successfully this type is to eat right, exercise regularly, and monitor blood sugar levels. Just by doing these few things, you will lose weight, feel better, and may even watch symptoms disappear.
